For a Sustainable Society Initiatives for Achieving SDGs
What are SDGs?
SDGs, short for Sustainable Development Goals, are the successor to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) established in 2001, and represent the international goals for the period from 2016 to 2030 adopted at the United Nations General Assembly held in September, 2015.
The SDGs comprise 17 goals and 169 targets aimed at achieving a sustainable world. They also call for changes in the way developed countries, including Japan, work, and pledge that "No one will be left behind" in the course of their efforts.
METAWATER’s Priority Areas for SDGs
The METAWATER Group believes that all 17 of the SDGs goals are vital for global sustainability.
In particular, taking into consideration the Group's business characteristics and social mission, we launched initiatives in the key areas of "6. Clean Water and Sanitation," "11. Sustainable Cities and Communities," and "17. Partnerships for the Goals."
The METAWATER Group, which specializes in water and the environment, naturally places significance on the expression “for all” of the 6th goal “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
In Japan, water supply coverage in is 97.9% (as of end FY2016), and wastewater sewered population coverage is 90.9% (as of end FY2017).
However, 2.1 billion people (approx. 3 in 10 of world's population) do not have access to safe water at home, and 4.5 billion people (6 in 10) do not have access to safe, managed toilets.
While improvements are required in water environments overseas, Japan's water and wastewater systems, which have been keeping up with rapid economic growth, are also facing various problems , including aging facilities and equipment.
The METAWATER Group aims to create cities where everyone can continue to live in comfort and with peace of mind by ensuring access to safe water and toilets for all.
Of course, it is impossible for METAWATER to accomplish this alone. It can only be achieved through collaboration with our partner companies, citizens, local governments, and local businesses.
The METAWATER Group aims to be a company that continues to develop together with local communities and society for the sustainability of its water and environmental infrastructure, focusing on achievement of these three goals.
