Completion of sludge fuel production facilities for the Kosei Sewerage Treatment Plant, Lake Biwa Regional Sewerage
Will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to about 3,800 ordinary households through the production of carbide by accepting dehydrated sludge from two wastewater treatment facilities
Metawater Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President: Tomoyasu Kida; hereinafter referred to as “Metawater”) has been entrusted by Shiga Prefecture Lake Biwa Regional Sewerage with the “Kosei Sewerage Treatment Plant Sludge Fuel Production Business.” We are pleased to announce that construction of sludge fuel production facilities, which started in May 2013, has now been completed.
The project aims to recycle sewage sludge generated at the Kosei Sewerage Treatment Plant and the Otsu City Water Treatment Center as carbonized fuel. Metawater has been entrusted with the design, construction, and operation and maintenance of the facilities under a DBO scheme.
By recycling sewage sludge, which has been treated as industrial waste, as an energy resource, the new facilities will reduce annual CO2 emissions by about 11,651 tons (for about 3,800 ordinary households) compared to the existing incineration / sludge melting facilities.
Overview of Kosei Sewerage Treatment Plant Sludge Fuel Production BusinessThe project is designed to produce biomass fuel by carbonizing sewage sludge generated at the sludge fuel production facilities of the Kosei Sewerage Treatment Plant and Otsu City Water Treatment Center, and use the fuel at coal-fired thermal power plants and electric furnace (for steelmaking plants). This is the first fuel production business to be operated in Shiga Prefecture.
Through the project, Metawater will contribute to the sustainable development of the region, and expand the use of renewable energy with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
