METAWATER collaborates with NTT DATA in IoT services for the water and wastewater businesss
METAWATER Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President: Tomoyasu Kida; "METAWATER") is pleased to announce that it has signed a basic agreement with NTT DATA Corporation (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President & CEO: Toshio Iwamoto; "NTT DATA") for collaboration in the area of Internet of Things (IoT) services for the water and wastewater business. The two companies are working to provide high-performance monitoring services from the second half of FY2015 by combining METAWATER's monitoring systems for water/sewage treatment plants as well as flow rate, water pressure, and chlorine residual concentration ("wide-area monitoring contents") with NTT DATA's new IoT cloud platform. Based on the agreement, METAWATER and NTT DATA will discuss collaboration in the sale of Water Business Cloud ("WBC") focusing on wide-area monitoring services in addition to collaboration in the IT field and businesses related to public water and wastewater services.
There is likely to be an increasing shift towards the outsourcing of the public water and wastewater business in Japan to the private sector as well as management/comprehensive outsourcing through the introduction of private funds to ensure more efficient business operations.* In anticipation of an increase in the need to use IT in the public water and wastewater business, NTT DATA and METAWATER have reviewed the effective use of IT in the public water and wastewater business since May 2014. Considering that the review confirmed the effectiveness of IT in information collection using sensor-based IoT technologies and big data analysis, the two companies have agreed to build the core IoT cloud platform and jointly provide IoT services for the water and wastewater business.
Details of the collaboration
The two companies are seeking to provide high-performance monitoring services from the second half of FY2015 by combining METAWATER's wide-area monitoring contents for WBC - a cloud-based platform to support the water and wastewater business - with NTT DATA's new IoT cloud platform.
The combined use of WBC wide-area monitoring contents developed by METAWATER and IoT cloud platform provided by NTT DATA will enable the use of various terminals, including easily available microservers with high environmental resistance, in wide-area monitoring operations requiring specific field terminals including telemeters. Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to enhance various functions including the application of image data and an increase in frequency of data collection.
Roles of each company
METAWATER: Coordination and sale of WBC monitoring services
NTT DATA: Provision of IoT cloud platform
Overview of IoT cloud platform
The IoT cloud platform offers the following four key functions. Equipped with functions to collect, accumulate, maintain, and manage information from sensors and devices in addition to the water and wastewater business, the platform serves as a base for big data analysis and offers IoT (M2M) services that can be used in various areas.
・On-site connection: Functions allowing connection with various devices, sensors, wireless equipment, and others on the field
・Communication environment: Functions to connect to various communication lines that connect field terminals with cloud
・Information processing: Functions to instantly process and accumulate a large volume of data/image collected from sensors
・Center functions: Functions to connect with customers' valuable content and to monitor 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
