METAWATER starts a test run of sand filtration backwash water treatment facilities at the Wierden Drinking Water Treatment Plant

METAWATER Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President: Tomoyasu Kida; hereinafter referred to as "METAWATER") is pleased to announce that it has started a test run of sand filtration backwash water treatment facilities using a ceramic membrane at the Wierden Drinking Water Treatment Plant in the Netherlands.

The Twente region where the Wierden Drinking Water Treatment Plant is located has traditionally had low groundwater and is facing an increasing number of water-related problems including surface water contamination caused by a tire factory fire and water shortages due to an increase in the population served. Meanwhile, close to 10% of the water produced is treated as sewer water during the sand filtration backwash water discharge process at the water treatment plant. In order to address these issues, the new facilities are designed to (1) promote the effective use of water facilities by filtering backwash water with a ceramic membrane and putting the water back into the water purification process and (2) reduce the volume of sludge generated. With full-scale operation of the new facilities, the average treatment amount of 1,200 m3/day (maximum treatment capacity of 1,700 m3/day) of backwash water will be possible in the future.

It has been possible to introduce a ceramic membrane to the sand filtration backwash water discharge process as a result of receiving high marks from Vitens, the largest water supply company in the Netherlands, for aspects of the system's performance and economic efficiency. These include the performance of a multi-barrier system (removal of bacteria and other microorganisms) required to put sewer water back into the water purification process for reuse, high durability and low-power, stable-operation without the risk of membrane rupture, and no need for a large space for installation so that the existing facilities and buildings can be maintained.

With the goal of achieving sustainable growth and maximizing profits, the METAWATER Group is giving the highest priority to expanding its overseas business. In addition to promoting the facilities which introduce the new use of ceramic membrane, the METAWATER Group will accelerate the expansion of business in Europe by leveraging its group strengths to enhance public-private partnerships with Vitens, METAWATER's collaboration partner Rood Wit Blauw Holding B.V. (Netherlands), and the steel distributor EUROSTEEL (Poland).

Overview of Vitens

・The largest water supply company in the Netherlands ・Population served: 5.40 million people (approx. 32% of the Netherlands' population of 16.80 million)
・Annual water production capacity: 330 million m3
・Water distribution to the northeast of the Netherlands

Overview of the Wierden Drinking Water Treatment Plant

・Official name: Wierden Drinking Water Treatment Plant
・Water purification flow: Water intake (groundwater) → rapid sand filtration → water softening (pellet water softening system) → manganese sand filtration → water distribution (no flocculant added)
・Water treatment capacity: 22,000 m3/day

Overview of the new facilities

・Number of ceramic elements: 24 (12 × 2 lines)
・Average treatment capacity: 1,200 m3/day (maximum treatment capacity: 1,700 m3/day)
