INPEX, Chiyoda and METAWATER Enter Contract with JOGMEC for Small-scale Demonstration of Ceramic Membrane-based Produced Water Treatment Technology
- (JOGMEC Technology Solutions Business Phase 2) -

METAWATER Co., Ltd. (President &CEO: Tomoyasu Kida),INPEX CORPORATION ("INPEX", President & CEO: Toshiaki Kitamura) and Chiyoda Corporation (President: Shogo Shibuya) (the three companies shall hereinafter be collectively referred to as the "three joint commissioned companies"), have submitted a joint proposal in response to a public invitation by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) for a proposal on "Small-scale Demonstration of Ceramic Membrane-based Produced Water Treatment Technology - JOGMEC Technology Solutions Business Phase 2" (hereinafter referred to as the "commissioned work"). The three joint commissioned companies announce that INPEX has concluded a contract concerning the commissioned work with JOGMEC on behalf of the three joint commissioned companies.

The commissioned work will be carried out over a two and a half year period to demonstrate the capability of METAWATER's ceramic membrane filtration system in produced water treatment technology. The commissioned work will take place at the Yabase Oil Field in Akita Prefecture operated by INPEX. It is expected that the successful demonstration of ceramic membrane-based produced water treatment technology will contribute to economic improvement in oil field production, extension of oil field lifespans, and reduction in environmental impact. By presenting this technology, the three joint commissioned companies aim to promote stable and efficient provision of energy and environmental sustainability.

Outline of commissioned work

Project name: Small-scale Demonstration of Ceramic Membrane-based Produced Water Treatment Technology - JOGMEC Technology Solutions Business Phase 2
Duration: From the contract date until January 31, 2018
Contents: Small-scale demonstrations of technology treating produced water extracted from oil fields using METAWATER's ceramic membrane filtration system
Location: INPEX, East Japan Regional Office, Akita Field Office, Soto-Asahikawa Plant and adjacent areas (Akita Prefecture)
Raw Water: Produced water from the INPEX-operated Yabase Oil Field
Properties: Conforms to river discharge standards mandated by Akita Prefecture
Capacity: Water treatment capacity: 150 kiloliters per day

Small-scale Demonstration Flow Chart

Outline of ceramic membrane-based water treatment technology

Membrane: Ceramic membrane element utilized at water and sewage facilities
Objective: Removal of suspended solids and oil particles contained in water
Past usage:
1) The ceramic membrane has been used in the removal of suspended solids for over 17 years at water purification facilities. It commands a share of over 40% on a capacity basis in the Japanese water purification membrane market, and has also been utilized in Holland, the US, Korea and Norway.
2) In terms of the treatment of produced water containing oil particles, a bench-scale test with a daily treatment capacity of 3.6 kiloliters was conducted in Japan in fiscal year 2013 and 2014. The bench-scale test has confirmed that the ceramic membrane is not only capable of removing suspended solids but also oil particles.
