What are SDGs?
SDGs stands for Sustainable Development Goals and is a set of international goals from 2016 to 2030 adopted at a UN summit in September 2015 as a successor to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) developed in 2001.
SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169 targets to realize a sustainable world, demanding changes in the existence of advanced nations, including Japan, and pledging that "no one will be left behind" in the process.
METAWATER's SDGs priority areas
The METAWATER Group believes that all 17 SDGs goals are important to realize a sustainable world.
Considering its business characteristics and social mission, we have launched activities by designating the followings as our priority areas: 6. Clean water and sanitation, 11. Sustainable cities and communities, and 17. Partnerships for the goals.
As a company engaging in water and environmental businesses, we take seriously the fact that "for all" is clearly indicated in Goal 6 "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all."
Currently, 97.9% of Japan is served by a public water supply (at the end of FY2016) and 90.9% is served by a wastewater treatment plant (at the end of FY2017). Both percentages are high.
However, 2.1 billion people around the world (about 3 out of 10 people in the world population) have no access to safe water at home and 4.5 billion people (6 out of 10 people) have no access to a safely managed toilet.
Water and sewage facilities and equipment in Japan, which experienced a rapid economic growth in line with the improvement of overseas water environment, are facing various issues, including aging.
The METAWATER Group aims to ensure availability of safe water and toilets for all and create comfortable, safe, and sustainable cities and communities for all.
Implementing these initiatives is not attainable on our own. Partnerships to cooperate with business partners, residents, local governments, local companies, and other stakeholders is what's needed to implement these initiatives.
With a focus on achieving these three goals, the METAWATER Group aims to be a company that consistently grows along with communities and society to ensure the sustainable existence of water and environmental infrastructure.
